Actant

Actant is a term used in literary theory to refer to someone or something in a narrative that plays an active role in fulfilling an integral component of the story. Actant can be a person, creature or object. Without the contribution of actants the story may be incomplete.

The term also has uses in linguistics, sociology, computer programming theory, and astrology.
