Actium

Actium, also Aktion, was a town and promontory in ancient Acarnania at the entrance of the Ambracian Gulf (Arta), in Greece, where Augustus gained his celebrated naval victory over Antony and Cleopatra in the battle of Actium on September 2, 31 B.C. Originally it belonged to the Corinthian colonists of Anactorium, fell in the 3rd century BC in the hands of the Acarnanians, and after the victory of Augustus, it became a Roman colony.
