Adam Bede

Adam Bede is George Eliot's first novel and also the name of its protagonist, a tall, stalwart, moral, and unusually competent carpenter. It was published anonymously in 1859, which took at once with both critic and public. The novel is about love, self-deception, religious feeling, innocence, and experience. George Eliot herself described the work as “a country story—full of the breath of cows and the scent of hay.”
