Adelsberg

Adelsberg, a German name for Postojna, is a town, and a municipality of the historical region Carniola, situated in the region traditionally identified as Inner Carniola, 22 miles from Trieste, in southwestern Slovenia, with a large stalactite cavern, besides numerous caves near it. Postojna is located on the Pivka River, and discovery of Betal Rock Shelter (Betalov spodmol) near it suggests it was populated by humans since the paleolithic era. It was first mentioned in history in the 13th century, became a borough in 1432, became part of the Duchy of Carniola under the Habsburg Monarchy, then in 19th century became part of the Inner Carniola Kreis, and was proclaimed a town in 1909. Between 1918 and 1943 (nominally to 1947) it was part of the Italy under the Treaty of Rapallo and was part of the province of Trieste as Postumia.
