ADONIS

ADONIS, in Greek mythology, was an extremely beautiful youth who was loved by Aphrodite and Persephone. It is because of his beauty, the word Adonis has become proverbial, and an extremely handsome young man is called 'an Adonis'.

When he was mortally wounded by a boar, Aphrodité (Venus) changed him into a flower of the colour of his blood, by sprinkling nectar on his body.

However, Zeus decreed that Adonis should spend only the summer months of each year with Aphrodite, and should spend the winter in the underworld with Persephone.
