Ahichchhatra

Ahichchhatra was an ancient capital city of the country of the same name, which is now only a site of archaeological importance. The site lies in the state of Uttar Pradesh in India.

The place has found mention in the Mahabharata. The area was in the ancient Southern Panchal. According to the Mahabharata, Drupad was king of Ahichchetra. Arjun conquered this country and gave it to his preceptor Dron as Gurudakhina. The Agra Circle of the ASI carried out excavation at Ahichchhatra as a sequel to the multi-disciplinary investigations at this site. Three mounds to the southwest of the main habitation mound at Ahichchhatra were taken up. The excavation yielded structural remains of the historical period. This was done by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kanpur.
