Ahmed Sekou Toure

Ahmed Sekou Toure (1922-1984) was a Guinean politician who led French West African independence movement. He advocated federal form of government and total independence; pan-Africanism and liberalized socialism oriented economy. He eventually became first president of independent Guinea in 1958. He is criticized for imprisoning opponents and purging suspected traitors.
