Albert

Albert (1490-1545) was archbishop of Mainz in Germany. Pope Leo X had granted him this dignity at the ransom of £15,000, which he was unable to pay. The Pope needed this money for building St. Peter's, and hence Albert borrowed. Subsequently, the Pope granted him the power to sell indulgences in order to repay the loan, in which traffic Tetzel was his chief salesman, a trade which roused the wrath of Luther, and provoked the German Reformation.
