Alewife

Alewife is a fish that derives its name from its own large belly that is referenced to the same word which formerly meant 'woman who keeps an alehouse'. It is found in the northwestern Atlantic and the Great Lakes. This fish of the herring family swims up rivers to spawn. Its zoological name in Alosa pseudoharengus and the family Clupeidae.
