Alexander Campbell

Alexander Campbell (1788-1866), an Anti-Calvinistic Baptist, born in Antrim, Ireland. He emigrated to America in 1807, and founded a sect called the "Disciples of Christ". He disowned creeds, and owned no authority in religion but the Bible. The sect had upwards of 5000 meeting-houses in America, and over half a million members in the late 19th century. Campbell executed a translation of the New Testament, in which he employed the words "immercer" and "immersion" for "baptist" and "baptism".
