Alexander William Kinglake
Alexander William Kinglake (1809-1891) was an English author and historian, born near Taunton. He was bred for the bar, but gave up the legal profession, in which he had a lucrative practice, for literature. He was the author of two works, "Eothen" and the "History of the War in the Crimea," in 8 volumes, the former a brilliantly written book of travels in the East, published in 1844, the latter a minute record of the war, of which the last volume was published in 1890, pronounced by Prof. Saintsbury, in a literary point of view, to be "an imposing failure".Nearby pages
