Alkaloids

Alkaloids is a term in chemistry for a group of nitrogenous organic compounds of vegetable or plant origin.

These are similar in their properties as well as toxicologically to alkalies. These contain carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen as a rule. When consumed, they start physiological actions. Many of them are poisonous, such as atropine and strychnine; and invaluable medicines, such as morphine and quinine.
