Allocution

Allocution is a term derived from Latin alloqui literally speak to. Thus allocution literally means a formal speech.

Such a formal speech is generally given to someone as advice or warning.

However, in legal matters, the term refers to the right to speak given to a defendant, especially in criminal cases, so that the defendant, already held guilty, can make a statement to explain as to why the sentence should be lenient.
