ALPACA

ALPACA is a gregarious ruminant of the camel family and is related to the llama. It is of genus Lama pacos, and belongs to Camelidae family. It is a native of the Andes, and particularly the tablelands of Chile and Peru. It is probably descended from the wild guanaco.

It is a long-haired domesticated South American mammal which. It is covered with a soft silky wool, of which textile fabrics are woven. In appearance resembles a sheep, but is larger in size, and has a long erect neck with a handsome head.

The wool of this mammal, and the fabric made from this wool, with or without other fibres are also called alpaca.
