Alpha-fetoprotein

Alpha-fetoprotein is a term in medicine for a protein that is produced by a fetus. It is present in amniotic fluid and the bloodstream of the mother. The level of presence of this protein is measured to detect certain congenital defects such as spina bifida, Down syndrome and several other anomalies.
