Amaranth

Amaranth is a name of a flower. The word is formed by two words 'amar' and 'anthos' . Amar is a Sanskrit word which is amarantos in Greek, meaning everlasting, and anthos in Greek is flower. Thus amaranthus, the genus of amaranth literally means an everlasting flower which never fades. Such a flower is imaginary.

However, we have amaranth of the genus Amaranthus, which exists in this world. This flower is not everlasting, but it fades. It has typically small green, red, or purple flower. It belongs to Amaranthaceae family. Several species of this flower are found, and most of them are grown as ornamental plants, except a few, which are grown for food.
