AMARYLLIS

AMARYLLIS is a shepherdess in one of Virgil's pastorals. The word has become proverbial for any young rustic maiden.

Amaryllis, also known as Belladonna lily, is a bulbous South African plant of the type of genus of the amaryllis belonging to Amaryllidaceae family. This plant grows white, pink, or red flowers. Its leaves are straplike. It is sometimes called Amaryllis belladonna.

There is also a popular South American tropical plant, a hybrid of the genus Hippeastrum, which was formerly known as Amaryllis. It is cultivated as house plant.
