Ambalika, according to the Mahabharat, was the youngest daughter of the king of Kashi.
She along with her two elder sisters was abducted by Bhishma to be the wives of Vichitravirya.
She became wife of Vichitravirya, and was eventually widowed by his death.
Vichitravirya had no son, and therefore, the sage Vyas was consulted to help him out. Vyas helped his wives to beget children.
