Ambient is something of re relating to the immediate surroundings of a place, its character and atmosphere, such as the area, air, temperature, environment etc. Ambient in Latin, or ambiant in French, literally means 'going around'.

In performance art, ambient music is used to create or enhance certain atmosphere. Such a music is mainly instrumental with electronic texture without persistent beat.
