American Revolution

American Revolution, also called the War of American independence, was the war of 1775-83 in which American colonists became independent from the British rule. The American colonists were unhappy over the economic policies of Britain, particularly the right of British parliament to tax the colonists. They were even excluded from participation in political decisions affecting their interests. It resulted in their revolt against the British rule.

The Boston Tea Party of 1773 is particularly noted for beginning of disturbances, however, actual fighting broke out in 1775. The Declaration of Independence was signed a year later.

France and Spain supported the declaration. French sea power played a crucial role. British army surrendered at Yorktown in 1781 which proved decisive.
