AMICE

AMICE is a white linen cloth. It is the name of a flowing cloak formerly worn by pilgrims.

A priest in Christian church wears such a strip of linen cloth over the shoulder when officiating at mass. It is especially worn on the neck and shoulders, under the alb, by a priest while celebrating the Eucharist, one of the sacraments.

The cap, hood or cape worn by members of certain religious orders are also called amice.
