Amortization

Amortization is a fact or process or gradually writing off the initial cost of an asset. It is to reduce or extinguish a debt by regularly putting aside money.

In late middle English the word was in use for transferring land to a corporation in mortmain, or sometimes in the sense of 'deaden'.
