Amphipathic

Amphipathic is a term in chemistry and biochemistry. In chemistry, an amphipathic molecules have two different properties at a time. Such a molecule has both a polar end and a nonpolar end. The polar end is attracted to water and the nonpolar end is repelled by water. Such as are found in detergents.

In biochemistry, an amphipathic molecule, especially a protein molecule, is known to have both hydrophilic and hydrophobic elements. Such as are found in phospholipids of biological membranes.
