ANDAMANS

ANDAMANS is a group of islands in India. It is situated in the Bay of Bengal and is surrounded by coral reefs. Islands located north of 10º N latitude are known as Andaman group of Islands. There are 325 islands in Andaman group. Andaman group of islands cover 6408 sq.km.

During the British rule in India, this island was used as a penal settlement since 1858. After independence of India in 1947, the cellular jail or Andaman jail is being maintained as a memorial.

Two islands of volcanic origin are found here-the Narcondum and the Barren islands. The former is now apparently extinct while the latter is still active.
