André-Marie Ampère

André-Marie Ampère (1775-1836) was a French physicist, mathematician and philosopher, born at Lyons. He was one of the founders of the science of classical electromagnetism, which he referred to as "electrodynamics". He is best known for his analysis of the relationship between magnetic force and electric current. He is distinguished for his discoveries in electro-dynamics and magnetism, and the influence of these on electro-telegraphy and the general extension of science.
