Angelica Kauffmann

Angelica Kauffmann (1741-1807), an anglicised name of Maria Anna Angelika Kauffmann, was a Swiss painter, born in the Tyrol. She gave early evidence of artistic talent. She came to London, and became one of the first members of the Royal Academy. She produced pictures on classical and mythological subjects, as well as portraits of the royal family among others. Her story forms the basis of a fiction by Miss Anne Isabella Thackeray (1837 – 1919), the eldest daughter of William Makepeace Thackeray (1811 – 1863).
