Antimacassar

Antimacassar was a piece of cloth put over the back of a chair to protect it from Macassar oil, which was formerly used by people to make their hair shine or lie flat. Though, it was used primarily to protect the chair from dirt and grease, it became later an ornamental piece of cloth. Antimacassars became popular in 19th century.
