Antioch

Antioch is a city in southern Turkey. Its Turkish name is Antakya. The city is situated near the Syrian border. However, in ancient days, it was capital of Syria under the Seleucid kings, who founded it in c. 300 BC.

Situated on the Orontes, the ancient capital was called the Queen of the East, lying on the high-road between the East and the West, and accordingly a busy centre of trade. Once, it was a city of great splendour and extent, and famous in the early history of the Church as the seat of several ecclesiastical councils and the birthplace of Chrysostom.

There was also an Antioch in Pisidia, afterwards called Cæsarea. It is worth mentioning that Pisidia was a region of ancient Asia Minor located north of Lycia, bordering Caria, Lydia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, and corresponding roughly to the modern-day province of Antalya in Turkey.

The ancient Phrygia had also a city by this name.

There is also a city by this name in north central California of the United States.
