Antoine Arnauld

Antoine Arnauld (1612-1694), also known as the "great Arnauld," was a French theologian, doctor of the Sorbonne. He was an inveterate enemy of the Jesuits and defended Jansenism against the Bull of the Pope. He became religious director of the nuns of Port Royal des Champs, associated here with a circle of kindred spirits, among others Pascal. Ultimately, he was expelled from the Sorbonne and banished from the country. He died at Brussels.
