Apartheid

Apartheid has now become a historical term for a political system in South Africa which segregated or discriminated on grounds of race. A slogan was adopted by Afrikaner National Party in the 1948 election and became successful. Apartheid, the earlier existing racial segregation, was afterwards extended and institutionalized. From 1960s onward, it was met with stiff resistence, rioting, and even terrorism. However, the White regime maintained the system until February 1991, giving some minor relaxation in the meantime.

Sometimes, this word is also used for discrimination or segregation on account of certain things other than race, such as sexual apartheid.
