Apophysis

Apophysis is a term used in zoology, anatomy, botany, and geology. In zoology and anatomy, it is a name given to a natural protuberance from a bone for attachment of muscles. It is also found inside the shell or exoskeleton of a sea urchin or insect.

In botany, this name is also applied to a swelling at the base of the sporangium found in some mosses.

In geology, it is a small offshoot of a rock extending from an igneous intrusion into the surrounding rock.
