Apple of Discord

Apple of discord, in Greek mythology, was a golden apple inscribed with the words, "To the most Beautiful,". It was thrown in among the gods of Olympus by Eris, the goddess of strife, at the wedding of Peleus and Thetis, which was contended for by the goddesses Hera, Athena, and Aphrodité. Paris of Troy, as referee, awarded it to Aphrodité, on promise that he would have the most beautiful woman of the world for wife. The apple them became a matter of discord, among the three - Hera, Athena, and Aphrodité - which ultimately led to the Trojan War. The phrase therefore means a much desired thing, though small, leading to a much bigger dispute.
