Aramaic

Aramaic was a dialect of Aram (the biblical name of modern Syria), the language of Palestine in the days of Christ, a Semitic language that has now almost entirely died out. It was used as lingua franca in the Near East from the 6th century BC, and subsequently replaced Hebrew as the language of the Jews in those areas. Aramaic remained in use until 7th century when it was supplanted by Arabic.
