Archibald Campbell

Archibald Campbell (1629-1685), the 9th Earl of Argyll, was a Scottish peer and soldier. He was the eldest son of Archibald Campbell, the 1st Marquess of Argyll, and Lady Margaret Douglas, the daughter of William Douglas, 7th Earl of Morton. He fought for Charles II. He was taken prisoner, but released at the Restoration and restored to his estates. However, he proved rebellious at last, and was condemned to death, but escaped to Holland. He made a descent on Scotland, where he was captured and executed in 1685.
