Argument

Argument is a reason or set of reasons given during an exchange of diverging or opposite opinions. Its aim is to convince others on certain point or idea, or to prove something right or wrong. It sometimes turns into a quarrel with heated or angry exchange of words.

In mathematics, argument is an independent variable associated with a function. It is used in determining the value of the function, such as:

if y=F (x1, x2)
the argument of the function F are x1 and x2, and the value=y

In linguistics, an argument is any of the noun phrases in a clause that are related directly to the subject, the verb, direct object, and indirect object.

In logic, argument is the middle term in a syllogism.

In computing, argument is a value or address passed to a procedure or function at the time of call.

In literature, argument, which has now become archaic, is a summary of the subject matter of the work.
