Artificial horizon

Artificial horizon is an instrument that is used to provide a horizontal reference plane for navigational measurement. The instrument is either a gyroscopic device or a device having fluid surface, typically one of mercury, that informs the navigator about the smallest change in orientation relative to Earth's horizon.
