Artist

Artist is a term that originally denoted a master of the liberal arts. However, the word is primarily used presently for a person who produces drawings or paintings. Its meaning is also extended to denote a person who produces any of the various creative arts, such as a sculptor, poet, novelist, or filmmaker.

According to a definition of Ruskin, which he prints in small caps., an artist is "a person who has submitted to a law which it was painful to obey, that he may bestow a delight which it is gracious to bestow."
