Ascender

Ascender is someone or something that ascends. It is therefore, the part of a letter that extends above the main part is called ascender, such as b, d, h etc. Such a letter is also ascender. Since ascend means 'to climb up', a device that helps in climbing by acting as a foothold or handhold is also called ascender. Such devices are clipped to a rope for climbing.
