Ashanti

Ashanti, also Ashantee or Asante, is a region of central Ghana; the people of the region; the dialect of Akan these people speak in; or anything of or relating the the Ashanti people or their language.

Ashanti was a pre-colonial negro inland kingdom in the Upper Soudan, north of Gold Coast territory, wooded, well watered, and well cultivated; natives intelligent, warlike, and skilful; twice over provoked a war with Great Britain, and finally the despatch of a military expedition, which led to the submission of the king and the appointment of a British Resident. The region was annexed by Britain in 1902, and became part of the former British colony of the Gold Coast.
