Asphyxia

Asphyxia is a condition of suspended respiration in the physical life. It is caused when the body is deprived of oxygen, and in turn causes suffocation, unconsciousness, or even death.

It is also a term frequently employed by Carlyle to denote a much more recondite, but a no less real, corresponding phenomenon in the spiritual life.
