Astrolabe

Astrolabe was an instrument used before the development of the sextant in navigation for calculating latitude. It was also used to make astronomical measurements, typically of the altitudes of celestial bodies. In its basic form it consists of a disk with the edge marked in degrees and a pivoted pointer. The instrument is known from classical times.
