Atalanta

Atalanta, in Greek Mythology, was a beautiful Grecian hunter princess celebrated for her agility. She was the prize of any suitor who could outstrip her on the racecourse. She would marry if defeated in foot race, but failure being death of the suitor. At last one suitor, Hippomenes his name, accepted the risk and started along with her, but as he neared the goal, kept dropping three golden apple one by one which Venus had provided him. Atalanta's stooping to lift them lost her the race, whereupon Hippomenes claimed the prize.
