Atantic

Atlantic, is the short form Atlantic Ocean. The word also refers to anything of the Atlantic Ocean or its adjoining area. It originally referred to the Atlas Mountains in North Africa, then to the sea near the west African coast, and finally to the whole ocean. It is the most important, best known, most traversed and best provided for traffic of all the oceans on the globe, connecting, rather than separating, the Old World and the New.

The Atlantic covers nearly one-fifth of the surface of the earth having a length of 9000 miles. Its average breadth is 2700 miles, average depth 15,000 ft., or from 3 to 5 miles, with waves in consequence of greater height and volume than those of any other sea.
