Atmosphere

Atmosphere is the covering of gasses that surround a planet, such as we find on earth. It is formed by joining 'atmos' (literally vapour in Greek) and 'sphere' (literally a ball or globe).

The word is also used to refer to the air in any particular place, such as the atmosphere of Delhi. We also call a place full of atmosphere if the place is interesting, exciting , or pleasurable. The pervading tone or mood of a situation, work of art, or a place is also refereed to as atmosphere, such as in 'hostile atmosphere'.

The short form 'atm' is used as a term in physics for a unit of pressure equal to 101,325 pascals which is mean atmospheric pressure at sea level.
