August

Augustis the eighth month of the year in Gregorian calendar that begins in January. It has 31 days. It is usually considered the last month of summer. It was originally called Sextilis, as the sixth month of the Roman year, which began in March.

This month was named after Augustus Caesar (63 BC - AD 14), the first Roman emperor. The month was named by the Senate of Rome in his honour as being the month identified with remarkable events in his career. Augustus was the official title given to him. His born name was Gaius Octavianus. He was also called Octavian.

It so happened that Octavian, wanted to have a month named after him. He then selected the month in which he was born. This month was september, but he selected it to be renamed Augustus, his official title, which was shortened to August.
