August Friedrich Gfrörer
August Friedrich Gfrörer (1803-1861) was a learned German historian, born in the Black Forest. He was educated for the Protestant ministry. In 1828, after residence at Geneva and Rome, he started as a tutor of theology, and two years later became librarian at Stuttgart. He published a number of historical works, including a "Life of Gustavus Adolphus," "Pope Gregory VII," a "History of Primitive Christianity," "Church History to the Fourteenth Century". In this last work he showed a strong leaning to Catholicism. He was appointed to the chair of History in the university of Freiburg. He was elected to the Frankfort parliament, and finally openly professed the Catholic faith.Nearby pages
