Augustin Pyrame de Candolle

Augustin Pyrame de Candolle (1778-1841) was an eminent Swiss botanist, born at Geneva, of Huguenot descent. He studied in Paris. He attracted the attention of Cuvier and Lamarck, whom he assisted in their researches. His "Flore Française," was published in six volumes. First he became professor at Montpellier, and then at Geneva. He is also known as the historical successor of Jussieu. He great contribution to botanical science is connected with the classification of plants.
