Aung San Suu Kyi

Aung San Suu Kyi (1945- ) is a Burmese political leader and State Counsellor of Myanmar (equivalent to prime minister). She is daughter of Aung San. She was awarded Nobel Peace Prize in 1991.

In 1988, she became leader of the National League for Democracy (NLD). She was kept under house arrest from 1989 to 1995 by the military government. Her party had emerged victorious in the 1990 elections, but the military government refused to recognize her victory. She was frequently detained from 2000 until 2010 when she was finally released.
