Autonomy

Autonomy, (i. e. Self-law), is a freedom to act independently. As a term in political science it is a status of self-government granted by a country to a region. Autonomy is sometimes also granted to institutions by giving them a considerable freedom to act independently. In the Kantian metaphysics it denotes the sovereign right of the pure reason to be a law to itself. In Kantian moral philosophy, it is the capacity of acting in accordance with one's moral duty, ie objective morality, rather than under the influence of one's desires.
