Avoirdupois is a term denoting a system of measurement of weights, used mainly in English-speaking regions of the world, and is based on pound which is equal to 16 ounces or 7000 grains. 'A pound avoirdupois' means 'a pound of weight', and 'avoirdupois weights' means 'weights in avoirdupois'. The term is sometimes used humorously such as 'putting on the avoirdupois' means 'putting on weights'.
